AMO-contracted tankers awarded charters to remove military fuel from Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility

The U.S.-flagged tankers Pohang Pioneer and Yosemite Trader were recently awarded time charters with Military Sealift Command to assist in removing fuel from the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility in Hawaii.

Both ships are owned and operated by U.S. Marine Management, Inc. American Maritime Officers represents all licensed officers aboard both ships.

Operated by the U.S. Navy, the Red Hill facility connects to the fueling piers in Pearl Harbor and supports U.S. military operations from all branches of service in the Pacific, but a jet fuel leak from the station contaminated the local water supply.

As a result, the Navy has agreed to empty the facility of its fuel in order to facilitate repairs. The underground Red Hill storage facility can house as much as 250 million gallons of fuel.

The Pohang Pioneer, which is capable of carrying 40,000 barrels of fuel, was awarded a five-year service contract.

The Yosemite Trader, which can carry 300,000 barrels of fuel, was awarded a three-year service contract.
